Long Term Assignments

1)      Study Guide Questions- Study guide questions need to be completed in correlation with the reading.  Provide quotes from the text where needed.  Leave space after each response for class notes.

2)      Reading Blocks- There are no chapters in this novel so the reading will be divided into three sections:

a.       Section One- pages 9-49 (end of the first paragraph) due _____________________

b.      Section Two- pages 49-84 (“…then our true work begins.”) due _______________

c.       Section Three- pages 84-127 due _____________________________________

3)      Vocabulary- Vocabulary from The Old Man and the Sea is mainly fishing vernacular.  We will look at these words as they appear but will not be tested on them.  Therefore, we will return to the Hit Parade for SAT preparation.

4)      External vs. Internal Conflict- Keep a chart listing obstacles that Santiago faces along with explanations of how he copes with each.  This assignment will be checked after each section and collected for a grade at the end of this unit.

5)      Character Analysis- Keep pages in your notes dedicated to what you find out about Santiago and Manolin.  Keep in mind the eight methods of characterization.  Be sure to provide quotes with page numbers.

6)      Code Hero- We will examine the Hemingway Code Hero through a quote journal.  Specifics will follow…

7)      Reaction-

a.       We will write letters to Ernest Hemingway explaining what we liked or disliked about The Old Man and the Sea.  Fold a sheet of paper in half and keep the “likes” on one side and the “dislikes” on the other.  The notes and letter will be due upon completing the novel.

b.      We will keep personal reaction journals recording our feelings towards Santiago.  Two entries are required for each section for a total of six.  Each entry should be three-quarters to a full page each.

8)      Symbolism- The Old Man and the Sea is rich with symbolism.  On separate pages of your notes, track Santiago as a Christ-like figure and the sea as a woman.  Be sure to indicate quotes with page numbers.

9)      Other assignments may follow…

The Old Man and the Sea is connected with the Bible.  Familiarity with the Bible is not necessary.  All information will be discussed in class or provided via handouts.  All information will observe the Bible as a piece of literature and not a spiritual guide.
